Our people like to sing and dance, this is proved by more than three thousand popular and traditional festivities celebrated along the year around the country.
Many of them celebrate a saint, nevertheless, the syncretism practiced in Andean and Amazon communities have narrowed the distance between these celebrations and their magical-religious believes. Other festivities instead have a pagan origin and are celebrated with color and happiness.
When talking about festivities we must name the Marinera Festival in Trujillo during January and February, here the party begins with guitars and cajon. Hundreds of couples participate in the Marinera National Contest, a joyful dance characterized by flirting; it represents the essence of our cultural origins. February is the month for Carnivals, people from many regions go out into the streets in parades to celebrate the entrance of Nho Carnavalon (the main character), and to choose Carnival Queen. On this same month, in Puno, the Candelaria Virgin is celebrated in one of the most beautiful, joyful, traditional and colorful folkloric festivities in our calendar. Celebrations last almost three weeks having as framework Titicaca Lake natural beauty. The Virgin is taken in procession, musicians and dancers march along. Summarizing, it is a festivity to honor the "Pachamama" or mother earth. Cusco, on June 24, Sacsayhuaman Fortress celebrates the Inti Raymi or Sun Festivity. It is a cultural ritual ceremony that gathers thousands of tourists from around the world. It takes place to honor the Sun, the Inca and his entourage make offerings to the earth. In Arequipa, on December 8, the city of Chivay, in the Colca Valley, celebrates the Immaculate Conception Festivity. It is a dance celebration, here you will have the chance to appreciate the beauty of colorful dresses, visit the Canyon, see the condor flight and visit colonial towns. |
