This amazing trek runs beneath the sacred Salkantay (6,271 masl / 20569 ft) Mountain, one of the highest and most stunning in the Peruvian Andes, located to the south of the Sacred Citadel of Machu Picchu. Throughout this trek, you will pass by Quechua communities and lesser-known Inca ruins, to finally reach Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Town on the third day. The Salkantay Trek is an interesting itinerary for those who did not find availability on the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Salkantay is an outstanding snow peak, located in the Cusco Peru region, about 60 km / 40 mi west-northwest of the city of Cusco Peru. It is the 38th highest peak in the Andes, and the twelfth highest in Peru. Machu Picchu is located at the end of a ridge that extends down from this mountain, north of Salkantay. Viewed from the main sundial of Machu Picchu, the Southern Cross is above Salkantay’s summit when it is located at its highest point in the sky during the rainy season. The Incas associated this alignment with concepts of rain and fertility, and considered Salkantay to be one of the principal deities controlling weather and fertility in the western region of Cusco Peru.
The Salkantay Trek also leads to Machu Picchu where after 5 days of walking in the midst of the most wonderful and unique nature you will find Machu Picchu. This travel experience makes of your visit to Cusco an unforgettable experience, full of satisfaction.
DIFFICULTY LEVEL: Challenging. We strongly recommend acclimatizing to the altitude by staying for at least two - three days in Cusco Peru prior to the trek.
