CHACHAPOYAS TOUR Q&A:

When is the Best time to visit Chachapoyas?
The rainy season starts in mid-October and ends in mid-April in the Mountains and Jungle, with January and February being the heaviest months of rain. Therefore, the best time of the year to visit Chachapoyas is from mid-April to mid-October. However, it should be noted that it is during the rainy season that the waterfall of Gocta is most spectacular.

What Kind of Clothing and Footwear Should I Bring?
The Andes highlands have warm days and cold nights. Dress in layers so that you can adjust your body temperature depending on local conditions and time of day. Excellent quality alpaca and llama wool products are available in the region and are great for staying warm at night.

Bring a small foldable pouch, duffle bag, daypack or backpack to carry your valuables, a water bottle to keep hydrated and any extras like a light coat to be prepared for temperature changes.

Daytime in the Andes can be extremely sunny and bright so bring sunglasses, a hat and some sunscreen. Chap stick or lip moisturizer is also useful since the air is dry.

Hiking Chachapoyas requires proper footwear. Sturdy shoes with good ankle support or light hiking boots.

What should I do about altitude sickness?
We strongly recommend you rest for at least 3 hours upon arrival to your hotel, and limit food intake as digestion might be a bit slow during your first day. Also, many hotels offer a tea made with the leaves of the coca plant (considered to have been a sacred plant for the Incas), as it is supposed to help relieve altitude sickness.

You can also purchase “Sorochi” or “Gravel” pills sold over-the-counter at pharmacies and airports. However, the best thing you can do is to rest, eat lightly on the first day, stay hydrated, and avoid excess physical activity until acclimatized. Most people do NOT have serious problems with the altitude, and only experience a mild headache and shortness of breath on the first day.
