This Peru Amazon program is for nature-loving enthusiasts who come to the Amazon region in search of a memorable and authentic experience!  You’ll stay at the welcoming Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion Lodge located in Tambopata, on the banks of the Madre de Dios River. In your 3-day program you will:

  • Visit a Botanical Garden with over 200 different species of rainforest plants.
  • Experience a birds-eye view of the rainforest atop a 98 ft. canopy walkway.
  • Go on nightly expeditions to experience the nocturnal animals of the Amazon.
  • Learn about the processing, uses and benefits of traditional indigenous plants, including fascinating native medicinal uses.
  • Enjoy a 30-minute canoe trip on a small lake and watch for wildlife – turtles, giant river otters, sun grebes, nightjars and herons.
  • Take a tour of the exhibits, designed by the National Geographic Society, that tell the story of the remarkable Madre de Dios region.

Take a morning flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado (departing at 08:05 and arriving at 10:45). At your arrival, you will be transferred to the Inkaterra Lounge (butterfly house). You’ll be welcomed by the lodge’s staff  who will give you the necessary information for your stay. Then, you will navigate by outboard motorized canoe along the Madre de Dios River to Hacienda Concepción (approximately 25 minutes).

After lunch, take a walk through the nature trails within the property, and learn about the primary and secondary rainforests, their components, uses, transformations by human beings, and their relevance to the world.

At dusk, take the Twilight River Excursion by outboard motorized canoe in the Madre de Dios River. During this activity, you will learn about the river’s ecosystem, Amazonian creeks, nocturnal animal behavior, and the southern constellations. In the evening enjoy a nice dinner in the dining room of the Casa Grande.

Overnight:  Hacienda Concepción

After breakfast, get ready for a long trek into the Tambopata National Reserve making your way to Lake Sandoval. Here you will understand why Madre de Dios is called the biodiversity capital of Peru. Learn about the Reserve’s conservation efforts and the lake’s formation. Navigate by dugout canoe across the mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to endangered giant river otters (Pteronura brasiliensis), blue and yellow macaws (Ara ararauna), red howler monkeys (Alouatta seniculus), black caimans (Melanosuchus niger), and one of the world’s biggest fresh water scaled fish, the paiche (Arapaima gigas).

After lunch, experience the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway & Anaconda Walk. Ride by outboard motorized canoe to the Inkaterra Canopy Walkway Interpretation Center, where you will learn about its construction and the conservation projects of ITA-Inkaterra Asociación (NGO). Go up one of the two 98-ft towers (30 m.) and cross the 7 hanging bridges that connect the treetops at 91 ft. high (28 m.). Enjoy the breathtaking views and spot white-throated toucans (Ramphastos tucanus), woodpeckers, trogons, squirrel monkeys (Saimiri boliviensis) and the three-toed sloth (Choleopus hoffmani).

After descending, keep feeling the incredible primary rainforest energy going along the 200-meter wooden bridge over the aguajales swamps. You will learn about the fauna and flora of this flooded ecosystem.

At night, participate in the Hidden Rainforest Excursion, and explore the nocturnal animals who display intriguing behavior patterns, and enhanced senses as adaptation mechanisms. Listen for nocturnal living nature sounds, and penetrate this hidden world. Finish your day with a pleasant dinner.
